Short Story 20

Hope

Hope was the kind of girl that you unexpectedly found yourself gravitating towards without explanation. The type of girl that without ever knowing the effect she had on people, pulled everyone towards her.

I mean sure, at just twenty-one, Hope’s beauty captured the attention of most, but that’s not the reason people stuck around. She had blue eyes that reflected neon from the sun each day as she took her surf board out against the waves, while her blonde hair darkened as the salt water cleansed her body. Short Story 19

The Outback

There was a story that used to make its way around the town when I was a kid, about areas of Australia that the settlers had never touched. According to the tale, there was a creature that lived in the red-dirt country of the Australian outback. Of course I had always assumed it was a tactic from the adults to stop children from wandering out into the bushland and getting lost, but apparently there were a lot more truths to the story than I first imagined. Short Story 18

The Foster Parents

He used to walk across the school grounds the same way every day, while feeling completely alone. Most of his schooling he was bullied, he didn’t have many friends, and by friends, he meant acquaintances, but despite this, school was markedly better than life at home.

Back in those school days, he didn’t think anything would have hindered him more in life than being born to a drug addict prostitute and an abusive electrician who used his mother as a punching bag before moving onto him when he tried to defend his mother. Continue reading “Short Story 18”

Short Story 17

The Zombies

There was one man on the entire planet that I trusted unequivocally. A man that I knew would always have my best interests at heart. What was strange about him was that he was a complete stranger, that I had just witness kill several men.

I guess circumstances have a lot to do with how you behave. I mean in everyday life I would never contemplate killing someone, or get in a strangers van. After all, I was conditioned that way; years of social habituation is a lot to consider…but then again, you can only ever know what you’re truly capable of when the intensity of a situation demands the appropriate response. The Conference

He had spent his entire life looking up at the stars at night, imagining an otherworldly adventure that would whisk him away from normality and his mundane existence.

In the forty years he had been alive, he had always wanted more. Complaisance was an ongoing struggle for him. Despite his well travelled exterior, with his comfortable and well-paid job that he had worked hard to get, he always felt like there was something incredible missing from his life. Short Story 15

The Clock

It has been two hours, thirty-two minutes, and eight seconds since I woke up handcuffed to a metal bed in the middle of an empty room. I know exactly how long it has been, because there is an enormous digital clock that has been annoyingly counting since my eyes opened.

If you had come up to me yesterday, or at least, I think it was yesterday, and asked, “If you woke up in a strange place, handcuffed, and in different clothes than what you left the house in, how would you feel?” I would have said something about freaking out at the mere notion of such an abnormality. Short Story 14

The Lieutenant General

The vibration from the beat was a familiar feeling cursing through my body as my friends and I danced like there was no tomorrow. I hadn’t had a day like that in far too long. I think the little nest I’d built while studying is too comfortable for my own good, and I’d fallen into a lull where I’d much prefer to have a TV show marathon, in my pyjamas, alone, rather than socialise.

My best friend and I had spent the evening getting ready, like we always used to do, before I became a recluse. We laughed, danced, and sang until our hearts were content, which of course meant that we were late meeting up with some other friends. Continue reading “Short Story 14”

The Stalker and The Detectives

To the girl where my love lies,

I am writing this letter to you because today was a depressing day, I saw you go to the police station, and I am hurt by your betrayal.

I suppose it all begins the day I met you. All I wanted to do was absorb your long dark brown hair, and honey eyes. When I first saw you at the supermarket I felt an instant connection. I didn’t even need to talk to you, to see the pure radiance and beauty that you constantly emit. You’re like a star that is so brilliant in its luminance, that others get scorned at the mere sight of you. I mean, I’m not one to pay attention to girls, but you…you my love are without a doubt the exception to the rule. Continue reading “Short Story 13”
